What is a Breast?

The breast is an organ in the female body responsible for the production of milk for nourishment of the baby.

What Breast Cancer?

Breast cancer is cancer that forms in the cells of the breasts.

Breast cancer has a tendency to move from its point of origin and travel to other body organs, this process is called Metastasis. Common body parts to which breast cancer con spread to are:
  • Brain
  • Bone
  • Liver
  • Lung

Risk Factors

There is no known cause of breast cancer, however, there are some risk factors associated with it:
  • Age
  • Family history
  • Having a mother or sister who had breast cancer increases risk
  • Inherited conditions
  • Diet - Unhealthy eating habits
  • Having first child at 30 years or more
  • Early onset of menstruation
  • Late Menopause
  • Smoking
  • Excessive alcohol intake

Symptoms

In its early stages, breast cancer me have no symptoms.
  • Lump in the breast.
  • Thickening in the breast.
  • Discharge or bleeding from nipple.
  • Change in size or shape of breast.
  • Inverted nipple.
  • Change in color or appearance of area around the nipple.
  • Redness or wrinlding of skin over the breast, like the skin of an orange.

Screening

Breast cancer does not wait neither should we, early detection is the best bet for your health, go and get screened!

The following methods used for screening methods are;
  • Breast self-exam
  • Ultrasound
  • Mammography
  • Magnetic resonance imaging.

Treatment

Women with breast cancer have many treatment options. Treatment options include;
HORMONE THERAPY
Use of hormone based drugs to treat cancer.
SURGERY
Removal of the affected part in an operation.
CHEMOTHERAPY
Use of drugs to treat cancer.
RADIOTHERAPY
Use of radiation to treat cancer.
